A contact dynamics approach to the Granular Element Method

چکیده
We present a contact dynamics (CD) approach to the Granular Element Method (GEM) Andrade et al. (2012) [1], abbreviated here as CD–GEM. By combining particle shape flexibility through Non-Uniform Rational Basis Splines, properties of implicit time-integration discretization (e.g., larger time steps) and non-penetrating constraints, as well as a reduction to a static formulation in the limit of an infinite time step, CD–GEM targets system properties and deformation regimes in which the classical discrete element method either performs poorly or simply fails; namely, in granular systems comprising of rigid or highly stiff angular particles and subjected to quasi-static or intense dynamic flow conditions. The integration of CD and GEM is made possible while significantly simplifying implementation and maintaining comparable performance with existing CD approaches. 2013 Elsevier B.V. Finite Element Simulation of Contact Mechanics of Cancer Cells in Manipulation Based on Atomic Force Microscopy
The theory of contact mechanics deals with stresses and deformations which arise when the surfaces of two solid bodies are brought into contact. In elastic deformation contact occurs over a finite area. A regular method for determining the dimensions of this area is Hertz Contact Model. Appearance of atomic force microscope results in introduction of Contact ...
متن کاملSEISMIC BEHAVIOR OF SILOS WITH DIFFERENT HEIGHT TO DIAMETER RATIOS CONSIDERING GRANULAR MATERIAL-STRUCTURE INTERACTION
Silos are structures that are used for storing different types of granular material. Dynamic behavior of silos under seismic loads is very complex. In this paper seismic behavior of steel silos with different height to diameter ratios is investigated by considering granular material-structure interaction using ABAQUS finite element package. Silo wall is modeled by shell elements and its behavio...
متن کاملContact models for very loose granular materials
One challenge of todays research on particle systems is the realistic simulation of granular materials consisting of many thousands of particles with peculiar contact interactions. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD, also called discrete element method, DEM) is introduced for the simulation of many-particle systems. A wide class of realistic contact models is presented, involving dissipation...
متن کاملThe dynamic excitation of a granular chain for biomedical ultrasound applications: contact mechanics finite element analysis and validation
There has been recent interest in the transmission of acoustic signals along granular chains of spherical beads to produce waveforms of relevance to biomedical ultrasound applications. Hertzian contact between adjacent beads can introduce different harmonic content into the signal as it propagates. This transduction mechanism has the potential to be of use in both diagnostic and therapeutic ult...
متن کاملMesoscopic approach to granular crystal dynamics.
We present a mesoscopic approach to granular crystal dynamics, which comprises a three-dimensional finite-element model and a one-dimensional regularized contact model. The approach investigates the role of vibrational-energy trapping effects in the dynamic behavior of one-dimensional chains of particles in contact (i.e., granular crystals), under small to moderate impact velocities. The only i...
